Yippee kay yay!

yippee kay yay!

I love the color pink, western shirts, novelty prints, cowgirls, vintage pin-ups, cactus, horses and snap buttons.

Now…SHOULD all of these things be combined into one totally ridiculous shirt, and if they are, is it reeeeaaaallly advisable to wear said shirt in public? Well, probably not. But I’m doing it anyway. If this is the shirt that gets me on “What Not to Wear,” then so be it.

I realize that there’s a hipster trend to wear novelty prints (mostly featuring moustaches, birds or cats) in a sort of ironic way. It’s like the Ugly Christmas sweater party trend. But…I don’t love novelty prints in an ironic way. I love them in an ACTUAL way. I can’t explain why. I just find them delightful.

002As for this shirt, it’s made by Rockmount Ranch Wear, an iconic western shirtmaking company based out of Denver. This is a family-owned company that has made great shirts for generations. I don’t think they make shirts in this print anymore–I found it new with tags on Ebay several years back.

But if you want a Rockmount shirt (and I recommend owning at least one–they also come in normal plaids and solids, not just crazy pink cowgirls) you can find them on-line or at better western wear stores.

The shirts are made in vintage fits and regular–pick vintage fit if you like things a little more fitted and less roomy. The vintage fit (like most vintage fit things) runs a trifle on the small side–I wear a solid medium in Rockmount.

Many of their shirts are still made in the USA, although I believe they outsource their decorative stitching overseas. If you want to learn more about vintage western shirts, you will really enjoy this book, co-written by Rockmount owner Steve Weil. 007 It is the definitive guide to vintage western-wear brands, and has tons of great pictures.

So, do you love novelty prints or hate them? Do you have things that you love to wear even though you KNOW people are probably looking at you and wondering just what the heck is wrong with you? Have a great Saturday! xoxo, Lauren

Love the shirt! Figured you might also appreciate the book Western Scarves…(http://www.amazon.com/Western-Scarves-Diane-Zamost/dp/142363618X)

Though quite diminutive for a coffee table book, my copy has lived on my coffee table for the last few months and is my go-to guide to all things vintage western chic–truly a joy to flip through, even if you don’t collect the scarves themselves. I suspect, much like me, after ogling the beautiful photos, you’ll be inclined to start a collection of your own!

Britt…I actually saw that book at McKay’s the other week but didn’t buy it because the dust jacket was missing and I want to find a nicer copy. You are right, it’s totally great…and when I was flipping through it, my thought was, “Great, now I have to collect western scarves!” Lol…
